A Cup of Eau Claire
The campus ministry that is University Lutheran Church sits
on the banks of the Chippewa River, just around the bend from the confluence
where it is joined by the Eau Claire River. This water flows past us every day.
In our city it provides water for refreshment, cleansing, recreation, and,
notably, beer brewing. We cross the rivers over bridges, on foot, bicycle,
scooter, or car, several times a day. This water is an integral part of life in
Eau Claire.
In Matthew 10:42, Jesus says, “ And if you
give even a cup of cold water to one of the least of my followers, you will
surely be rewarded.” (NLT) This is my hope for this blog, that it will be a
little bit of something helpful, refreshing, a gift for the reader. I will post
Bible study helps, sermons, recipes, poems, reflections on life around us here
on campus, and I hope to have other contributors from the ministry as well.
Our scriptural and church
traditions are filled with water: creation, birth, flood, baptism, new life,
streams of justice, river of life, pools of healing, seas that are walked
through and on top of. Miracles and divine revelations happen near water; with
water in the story, we can expect God nearby.
As the river runs past my
church windows each day, I do expect God nearby. And I find God nearby, in the
many cups of cold water that come through the people who grace this building
and this life with their presence, and the experiences we have together.
Thanks for coming over for a
cup of Eau Claire.
